Encyclopedia of Chicago Video Gallery: Chicago on Screen

Encyclopedia of Chicago This video gallery offers fascinating views of late-19th and 20th-century life in Chicago through rarely seen historic footage.

Three short films from 1897, depicting the bustling activity of downtown and the Union Stock Yard, were made to promote rail travel. Two other pieces highlight Chicago's technical achievements, from an electric sign on Michigan Avenue to the displays at the 1933-34 Century of Progress Exhibition. Several films illustrate the relationship between politics and emerging communications technology in the mid-20th century, while others offer entertaining snippets of film and television from Chicago's past.
