Examination of Mr. Hamilton by Mr. GRINNELL.
Q Mr. Hamilton, if you should be taken as a juror in this case to try the same upon the proof presented to you, do you believe that you could determine the innocence or guilt of the defendants upon the proof presented to you in court, regardless of everything else--regardless of your opinion and regardless of everything else?
A I think I could.
Q Have you any conscientious scruples against the infliction of the death penalty in proper cases?
A Not a bit.
Q Do you believe in the maintenance of the laws of the State and of the Government of the United States?
A I do.
Q Have you any sympathy with any individuals or class of individuals who have for their purposes or objects the overthrow of that law by force?
A I have not.
Q Where were you born?
A Nova Scotia.
Q How long have you been a citizen of the United States?
A Five or six years.
Q How long have you lived in Chicago?
A 20 years.
Q Have you been in mercantile business all of the time?
A Not for myself.
Q Before you began for yourself you were employed by others?
A With Richardson, Boynton & Co. most of the time.
Q That is not a firm now in existence?
A Yes, they are in existence on Lake Street.
Q Where is their place of busness.
A 84 East Lake Street.
Q It is a wholesale concern?
A Wholesale and retail, manufacturers of hot air furnaces.
Q Do you now any of the defendants?
A No sir.
Q Do you know either one of the counsel?
A No sir; never saw them that I know of.
