  St. Michael's Ashes
St. Michael's Ashes Pieces of the Past
The largely immigrant congregation of St. Michael's Catholic Church outgrew its building at what is now North Avenue and Hudson Street and erected a new house of worship just before the fire at Hurlbut and Linden (now Eugenie) in the North Side's Old Town. The walls of the structure remained substantially intact and became part of the new building. According to the inscription on this plaque, the enclosed ashes were swept into the cellar and then rediscovered years later.
