The Chicago Historical Society building at Dearborn and Ontario was one of the saddest
casualties of the fire, for with it went many links to the Chicago that was, as well as such
priceless holdings as the original of the Emancipation Proclamation. Of the Society's
library of 100,000 volumes, all that remained, besides a book out on loan, was this
fire-damaged copy of a volume of hymns, titled Spirit of Prayer. What few other things that
survived were stored in a building that fell to the fire of 1874.
