The completely (and constantly) rebuilt downtown. By this time Chicago was the second city in America, with a population of over 1,600,000--nearly five times that of the time of the fire, and nearly eighteen times the size of the city of which Alexander Hesler took his photographs from atop the Courthouse in 1858.
