The lakefront looms in the background. The church steeple on the right is likely that of the Second Presbyterian Church, at the northeast corner of Wabash and Washington, known also as the "spotted church" and the "Church of the Holy Zebra" for the patterns in its stone exterior. Its architect was James Renwick of New York, who designed Grace Cathedral and St. Patrick's Cathedral in that city, as well as the main building of the Smithsonian in Washington. This entire block to the east of the Courthouse is now the site of the Richard J. Daley Center.
