This virtual bookshelf contains the three most comprehensive of the many instant histories,
all with fancy cover designs engraved in gold. On the left, the grandest of a series of fire
histories penned by Chicago clergyman E. J. Goodspeed, The Great Fires in Chicago and
the West. History and Incidents, Losses and Sufferings, Benevolence of the Nations, etc.
etc. As the title page declared, it was "illustrated with maps and scenes," and was
appended with "a record of the great conflagrations of the past." In the center, Elias
Colbert's and Everett Chamberlin's Chicago and the Great Conflagration, and, on the right,
James W. Sheahan's and George P. Upton's The Great Conflagration. Their respective
lengths are 677, 528, and 458 pages. All were published before the end of the year.
