Several fire histories printed in America were also soon available in German language editions, presumably for the large German-speaking audience in this country (almost eighteen percent of the Chicago population of Chicago in 1870 had been born in Germany), as well as for export. Regardless of which language one prefers, each of these versions of Sheahan's and Upton's title page gives a good sense of the breadth and title length of the fire histories.
