General View of Chicago After the Fire, 1871 (William S. Shaw, Photographer) Arresting Images
{ Red/Blue Stereograph }

William S. Shaw, whose photographs were the basis of the Harper's Weekly cover (in the Front Page News Gallery) depicting the ruins of nine Chicago churches, conducted his business from an office on 22nd Street. While it is difficult to tell for sure, the subject here appears to be the desolation in the North Division, with the Water Tower seen in the distance, from the southwest. The ruined church to the right is possibly Holy Name Cathedral.
