  The Fire Escape
The Fire Escape, ca. 1871
(Kellogg & Bulkeley, Hartford)
Arresting Images
A family group of women and children in a stirring episode. As the caption explains, they were awakened at midnight only to discover that their sole hope of escape--whose final outcome is unknown--is by passing from one rooftop to another by this precarious bridge that appears to be suspended in the crimson flames that will soon consume it.
