The Great Chicago Fire and the Web of Memory is designed as a low-overhead web site. Pages
and images are organized so that download time should be reasonable even over 14.4 kbps modem connections.
Even users with 386/68030 class machines should be able to use the entire site, although image display
may be somewhat slower. The pages will display adequately in monitors
measuring 14" or larger. The site has been tested with the Netscape Navigator
and Microsoft Internet Explorer.
Advanced Features
Some pages in this site require the installation of software not included with every web browser.
Digital Video
To view the newsreel footage ("City Gets Revenge"), you must
have QuickTime installed on your computer. QuickTime has been standard on Macintoshes for several
years and is probably already installed. Microsoft Windows does not include QuickTime by default, but
many Windows users will have already installed it. Download
QuickTime from Apple's QuickTime web site.
Shockwave
To view the interactive
version of Alexander Hesler's Chicago Panorama, you must have Macromedia's Shockwave plug-in
installed for your web browser. Download the Shockwave plug-in
from Macromedia's web site and follow the instructions which accompany it.
MIDI
To hear some of the songs composed about the fire
("Pity the Homeless," "Passing through
the Fire"), you will need a MIDI
plug-in. We have used Crescendo in our testing, although there are other
plug-ins which should function as well.
Download Crescendo from the
LiveUpdate web site.
"Three-Dimensional" Images
To view our modernized versions of the stereographs (see the
the Arresting Images Gallery),
you will need red/blue (anaglyphic) glasses. Glasses from 3-D movies will work fine.
Paper, plastic, metal and clip-on red/blue glasses are available for sale from
Reel 3-D Enterprises.
