| Rescue of Ladies from the Flames, 1872 (Frank Luzerne, The Lost City!) | |||
| Another thrilling scene from Luzerne, this one a moment of daring rescue of imperiled maidens that could have come out of an opera or melodrama set in an ancient castle. Swain and damsel, brightly illuminated by the fire, cast a romantic shadow on the venerable building that hardly seems appropriate to 1871 Chicago. Such illustrations, and accompanying stories of bravery, attached the timely incidents of Chicago's destruction to timeless celebrations of gallantry and heroism. | |||
