| A Family Terribly Perish on the Rooftop of a House, in View of the Multitude
Below, 1871 (E.J. Goodspeed, The Great Fires in Chicago and the West) |

| Goodspeed was the popular pastor of the Second Baptist Church. When the First Baptist Church sold its site at LaSalle and Washington to the Chamber of Commerce and built a new church outside of the downtown in the South Division, members of the Second Baptist Church disassembled the old building and reconstructed it in the West Division. Goodspeed published three successively larger fire histories before the year was out. While his were among the most pious in tone, all the fire accounts include such heartbreaking scenes as are depicted here, though they also marvel at the relatively limited loss of life. | |||
