Go, Flames!, 1996 Enduring Symbol
One of the many ways in which the city has fondly recalled and tamed the fire that consumed it has been by trying to appropriate its aggressive power. In the 1970s Chicago's entry in a short-lived professional football league was named the Fire. Similarly, a June 1996 Sports Illustrated cover showing Chicago Bull Michael Jordan irresistibly driving to the basket during his team's NBA title quest was captioned "Chicago Fire." As the bumper stickers above attest, the University of Illinois at Chicago has adopted the conflagration as symbol and mascot.
