Tending the Fire
Dr. Otto Schmidt, CHS President, and Caroline McIlvaine, who served as the Society's Librarian for the first quarter of the twentieth century, appear to be about to join a fire department official in pulling this ninety-year-old pumper, which predates the fire of 1871 by three decades. The setting is on Dearborn Street, in front of the CHS building. In this period the Society continued to be active in its longstanding effort of collecting fire memoirs from those who had experienced the conflagration first-hand.
